The weekend after I convocated with my Masters Degree in Nursing, I headed to Edmonton to the first educational event for PPOC-Alberta (Professional Photographers of Canada) since the pandemic started. I think I'm addicted to education.
I've been in the PPOC for 12 years now and was heavily involved until I started back to school in 2013 when I took a back-seat in the PPOC and brought my photography business from full-time to part-time. I stayed involved in the image competition arm of the organization while I was in school. I was often on the judging panel.
I was the image competition chair this year for the Alberta competition. There is also a National competition that happens in the Spring. On the Saturday, I presented the trophies for the image competition awards. It was fabulous to be contributing to the photography industry like this. I'm always so inspired by the caliber of imagery that is competed.
I was also able to see the Manns from Two Mann Studio speak about wedding photography.
I saw Gavin John talk about photojournalism and he is such a deep person that has a unique approach to editorial photography. His wisdom will stay with me for a long time.
If you are a photographer, it is worth it to look into the PPOC. It is important to be professionally connected to and give back to the industry that you are a part of. If I were a client, I would want to know my photographer is serious about their profession.
