In 2019, a year before the "yellow dress project", there was the "red dress project" with the same idea, but with a red dress. This was my submission.
I was in the middle of school and photographed all these women in one week, then composited the image together. The title is "I come as one, but I stand as ten thousand" and it is bringing awareness to the "red dress project" which highlights the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women. The woman in the centre is the only one with the reflection in the water to bring attention to her voice. The indigenous/first-nations individuals in regalia are the only ones looking at the camera in a protective stance to the woman kneeling in the centre. This is set in front of a mountain sacred to the Blackfoot people here in Southern Alberta.
This messaging is something I've very protective of and I wanted to bring forth a profound image with a profound message that these women are not alone. I also want to applaud all these women who came to the call to be photographed for this on short notice.
