As time passes, I like to reflect on what I've been through and how far I have come. I see the difficult things in my life as a resilience resume. One thing about life is that hard things are always coming.
Now that I'm in my 50s, I have made it through many different difficulties and know nothing stays difficult forever. When I was younger, I felt like a feather on the wind. I was tossed around by the winds of difficult things because I had no skills. My parents could not give me skills, they themselves never had.
The older I got, and the more things I went through, the more wellness skills I learned and incorporated. I like to think I'm more like a lighthouse now. The seas and the skies can do whatever they are going to do, but a lighthouse is planted in strength and light along a coast of other lighthouses to illuminate the way.
I was making tea this afternoon and pulled this mug from the back of the mug shelf. Back in 2013, I was experiencing a particularly low point in my world. I painted this mug and put this Beatles' quote on it. This quote was one of the inspiration pieces that got me through that particular difficulty. Now when I see the mug, it reminds me of how I pushed through and got to the other side.
As a world, we are still working through difficult things. Take care of your own soul, take care of your relationships, and love and be kind.
When life gets hard, breathe slowly and know that the small things that get you through each day will be the building blocks for changes that will nurture healing and opportunities in your future.
Upon experiencing a particular significant and long-term relationship breakdown due to betrayal, I remember telling him that he is going to miss the best of who I am because of the growth from soul-fractures he contributed to with his decisions. Now that experience is years in the rear-view, I'm proud of the increased authenticity, my more steadfast and unique voice, and the increased confidence in who I am because of the difficult experience that was.
"Spread your broken wings and learn to fly". We cultivate depth, character, and soul from being broken and healing than having never been broken in the first place.
Gratitude is a wonderful thing. It is an action of giving and building, it is an action of releasing, and it is an action of savouring. I am thankful for every day I have, good or bad. I'm grateful for my people. I build, release, and savour every day. Photography helps me do that and is a grounding activity for me.
May 2023 fill your soul. Thank you for being on this journey with me.
